On April 27, 2005, I made a quick trip to the pits at Ensley Bottoms and just as I was leaving, I found a pair of distant dark ducks. In my haste I passed them off as Black Ducks but the ID worried me and I was back on the 28th and took photos of this pair of Mottled Ducks. All the previous records as you can see were in the fall season. Here's hopeing that they stay around and bring some young with them. Unfortunately the habitat is much degraded this year with little water but the birds could be hanging out around nearby McKellar Lake. Note pale, unmarked throat, black spot on the bill at its base and the pale interior markings on body feathers.
