Unfortunately, the female slept most of the time I was there. Her bill was orangey with some dark or dusky areas along the culmen which fits the description of some Mottled hens but is not shown in most of the recent field guides. Note the interior markings on the body feathers. The tail feathers were dark unlike female Mallards which have pale outside tail feathers. Both birds had a white trailing edge to the speculum when they flew.
