It is not known where the statue actually stood. He was moved into the wood probably in the 1800s. He was discovered much later and was airlifted by helicopter and reinstated in his present location. During his moves, he lost a foot and a hand.

I can just imagine coming face to face with that on a dark night in the middle of the woods. He was probably banished there in case he offended the ladies.
