Construction on the church began in 1878. The church was home to a "missionary boat" during the 1920's - 1930's taking services and the gospel to rural areas that did not have access to roads.

Hurricane Andrew in 1992 inflicted much damage to the church, as it did to much of the area but the church rebuilt, as did the surrounding community.
