Douglas-fir beetle kill

This tree was recently killed by several thousand Douglas-fir beetles burrowing underneath the bark to lay their eggs in the tissues that transport water, nutrients and sugars up and down within the tree. The larvae feed on that tissue, and are helped out by fungi that hitch a ride in the shell of the beetle and clog up the tree's defensive structures. Notice the all the saplings that are ready to grow into the space left by the dead tree.
