Saguaros by morey000

Tucson, AZ

Saguaro (pronounced sah-WAH-roe) cacti are very slow growing. These two buddies germinated together about 175 years ago and both are over 30ft tall, and happen to be convieniently located in my driveway. They are home to many local birds who live inside them in holes chipped out by the Gila (pronounced HEE-la) Woodpecker. While not the best photograph in the bunch, I challenge an "honorable mention" category of the *oldest* (living) friends. Those of you who live near bristlecone pines or sequoia can beat me by a couple thousand years.

It's not unlikely that the mesquite tree which is between them, served as the mother plant, sheilding the delicate young saguaro cacti from the sun and cold during the first 15 or 20 years of their lives. So- there are really 3 old friends here.

Hi, I always prefer to stay close to reality - grey skies and overall greyish tonality in this case - just played with a great feature of Photopaint... which is greatly put into the dark by the Photoshop...
I'm at 'me at pantonov dot com' - just in case.

Plamen. Thanks for the offer. I took the shot and bracketed the exposre a few times, then did adjustments to my liking. The sky isn't 255, but rather a gray- which is what it was that day. The drearyness of the cacti was intentional- as these old fellows are dying . Partially due to the extreme drought conditions over the last 10 years, and partially due to all of the human activity nearby that crushes their fine root structure that blankets the ground just under the surface. The accordian structure of the Saguaro allows it to absorb water and expand. You can see that they are both deflated, and their color is fading. Healthier specimens are a richer dark green. Now that I've got another week- perhaps I'll shoot them again with the early morning sun illuminating them.

175yo is impressing! Good picture of unfamiliar nature.
(I played with contrast/intensity in my 'old friend' Corel Photopaint adding more light, but completeley losing the sky detail - can email, if interested)

Great idea. Well exposed against the background of the sky.
Richard.
