The background is a carpet and its texture was just not working for me. You can see the original shot in the "Originals" gallery. In Photoshop, I selected the background and applied a combination of filters... Gausian Blur and Radial Blur. Radial Blur gives an effect like zooming the lens during the exposure, but if you mask out the subject, it says sharp.

I like the way the backround disappears... Is it just DOF or did you PP somehow ?
I had the overhead room light centered in the stones hoping to get some kind of dramatic flare of light off of them. But it wasn't working and, as you say, just looked overexposed. Here is another go at it.
