Last Rays by John down under

Jenkins Reserve, Salisbury, South Australia

As the last rays of late afternoon sun bathe this gum tree with their golden light, you can already see the shadow of night creeping up the trunk of the tree.

Hi JDU,

That is some nasty looking tree. The sun coming in from the side really makes the image. Sort of gives me impressions of what one might find if visiting Ichabod Crane at Sleepy Hollow.

very interesting seeing this shot of a "natural" structure next to the previous one of the man-made pylon particularly since the compositions are similar, with the backdrop of the sky and the light to lead the eye in. I like the way the warm light picks out the whorls and textures of the bark.

Great shot John. I'm sure there are some ants crawling up there somewhere. Great sky color, things really that blue down under?

Thanks for your comments guys. Well spotted on this being a gum tree Adrian, although I guess that's pretty well known around the world as one of our icons I suppose. I was in the reserve where I've been taking bird photos and looking for a tree to look up for C18. When the sun was going down, the colours struck me as being worthy of exploring and this tree was nearby as the time. Only a couple of minutes later the opportunity had passed as the shadow had risen too far up the tree to make it worthwhile, so luckily this one worked out. Cheers, John

I really love the blue/orange contrast. Great light and original composition.

John, This shot is just fantastic. The light and shadows, angle of the branch, perspective...all just perect. - Marc
