Sighted by John down under

Adelaide, Australia

This is one sure way to energise Molly. She had no trouble maintaining focus on the tasty treats despite the multi-flash activity going on around her.

I would have to agree that hunger pangs (real or perceived) are the real source of the energy impulse in this shooting session, certainly strong enough to give Molly no problem with navigating in the dark conditions needed for the multi-flash to work. I've thought a bit more and I think I like the solid image to be at the start of the sequence to give a stronger indication of that energy pulse, at least IMHO. Cheers, John

John,

Good to see Molly again -- your poor tortured subject ;-) Interesting use of the multi flash. Pavlov would be proud :-)

Multi flash - long ago I wanted to try this with a golf swing never had the chance etc.
But this is very nicely done.

Perhaps more 'impulse of hunger' as she looks like a laid back sort of pooch!

Thanks for the comments. No red eyes here, just red treats at the left. I wanted a tight crop to really home in on the sequence (and remove background clutter), personal preference really. Green eye is a fact of life with pets and flash photography unless the flash is at enough of an angle to the lens-subject path. I originally started trying to process that out, but gave up. For this entry, I thought the bright green eye provided an additional point of energy focus. Rear curtain sync can produce a ghosted image that finishes with a solid final subject, but the ghosted trail leading to the final subject comes from ambient light and the solid image comes from the flash at the end. I thought multi-flash would provide a much better demonstration of energy impulses, so rear curtain sync would not be an option, although I wasn't thinking about that at the time I took the shot, just trying to get a reasonable multi-flash outcome. It's much easier to have the subject still at the start of the sequence for a few flashes to paint a solid image than to have her be still enough at the end of the sequence to do the same thing. I may have another go later if I get time once it is dark enough in here to do meaningful multi-flash. Cheers, John

Interesting shot (although I can't recall seeing any of yours that weren't). I was a bit distracted by the white eyes - guess the sort of "locked" me in place and distracted from the movement.
It's also be interesting to see something like this in "reverse" - where the ghost images lead to the solid one.

Hi John,
Very interesting image. It does give the feeling of the burst of energy. I just feel that the energy was a bit compressed by the way the image is cropped and also I got distracted by the red eyes.
Cheers

I used my Sigma EF-500 DG Super, older SNo that does not fire multi-flash with shutter release (the newer ones are compatible). I had my camera on a tripod and fired the flashgun manually in multi-flash mode to try to coincide with the long exposure, while also coordinating Molly's movements with the help of my wife. Luckily, we didn't have to try for very long to get this one. This multi-flash shot has no doctoring, just normal PP. Molly could not really be called a new model, having appeared in all 13 Minolta Challenges. Cheers, John

Love it! What a super trick you pulled off with this multiple exposure of Molly, and you firmed it up perfectly with a clear view of Molly's moosh (er, face that is). You may have a new model (if you have enough treats).

Seriously, it's an accomplishment to get telling shots of animals, and you've done it--Molly and you both demonstrate energy. - Jean

Well Done. It really works with the theme. Looking at this picture makes me think that Molly is a source of EXPLOSIVE energy.

Almost forgot what Molly looked like, what with all you ant friends! LOL

What kind of flash did you use here? Interesting effect! Well done.
