Never Again

Several buses from Los Angeles came up to the Pilgrimage. One group made banners which were hung around the fence around the monument. There are names written on the edges of the banner. I think those are the names of people who were at Manzanar.

I, too, hope that this is the message of this image. It was only as I processing the image that I saw an accidental ambiguity in that the whole message reads " You will not be forgotten - Never Again!" and the "not" is folded under. I think this acts as a warning of the possibility that things might be forgotten.

"Never again", a hopeful slogan, a cry that the inhumanity experienced at Manzanar will not be forgotten and will not happen again. Sadly, the realities of history tell a different story. We do forget and stand passively on the sidelines as illegal internments, exterminations, holocausts, and genocides take place. "Never again" requires that we not be passive and that we speak out vehemently against the inhumanities perpetrated by man against his fellow men. This is an interesting image, Tim, that engenders a lot of discussion and soul searching.
