How heartening that this image has received so many comments that expand its meaning. I do, though, need to make one correction - they are carnations, not roses.

As Iris and Phil have both eloquently commented, I completely agree. Also I have to comment on the beautiful composition the red roses against the bolder Japanese characters form.

From the shadow of despair comes the light of remembrance and commemoration. In the simple elegance of this image, you have created a powerful yet spiritual statement of hope and redemption. Beautifully done, Tim.

That is what I marvel at as well -- the wall is almost taken to the stage of burnout, yet there is detail in the shadows. The contrast is powerful and affecting.

I, too, responded to the simple elegance of this scene. I'm glad I was able to get the range of exposure to tell the story.

As abstractly elegant as it gets, Tim. I love the roses that somehow manage to live in both light and shadow. The monument, as both of us know, commemorates those who died in this camp during World War II. Some of the roses -- symbols of remembrance -- hide in the shadows, while others see the bright light of day. You seem to saying that what is being commemorated here is only the tip of an iceberg. There is much more for all of us yet to learn about Manzanar. This is my favorite image in this gallery.
