Turkish Martyrs Memorial

There are few Ottoman cemeteries on the peninsula; the entire peninsula is considered sacred ground. At the time, Ottomans did not have last names and were identified through their town and province. These glass panels list the Ottoman soldiers that died during the campaign, and to find an individual you would need to first know their town.

After the war, Mustafa Kemal became President of the Republic of Turkey and one of the reforms that he instituted was that everyone received a surname. The National Assembly gave Kemal the surname "Atatürk," meaning Father of the Turks. His given name was Mustafa (meaning "chosen") and a schoolmaster added "Kemal" (meaning "perfection") due to his performance.
