The Carter Brothers moved their car building business to Newark CA in the 1890’s. Located on the east side of the track, they built a variety of rail road cars using hand tools. Twenty-five of the original San Francisco Cable cars were made in Newark. Today, the Newark made cars numbered 2,3,5,6,7,8,10,11,12, and 20 are in service on the Powell lines. Although all of the cars have been renovated, they were done so in keeping with the original design and in most cases the roofs and seats are from the original cars made in 1893-94.
