The construction of Durham Castle, a UNESCO heritage site, began in 1072. Strategically important, it helped to defend the border with Scotland and control local English rebellions. Home to the English Prince Bishops for almost eight centuries, the castle’s appearance has changed over the years as it was added to, fortified and rebuilt. Today’s structure, if viewed from Framwelgate Bridge, has the appearance of a village on a hill or a collection of ramshackle dwellings.
For Fool’s Paradise, NOVAK used elements of stop-motion animation, paper cutting and hand drawn images to create a fantasy location interweaving stories and characters.
