...when teenage son asks to be taken to the sports shop for a new pair of trainers do one, some or all of the following: 1) Say you will go when he starts paying keep; 2) Tell him to think again and go later with his mum; 3) Go and watch as the one pair of trainers turns into a Brazil home strip and a couple of t-shirts and football shorts. Guess which one I did? The Brazil strip cost £60 (shirt £40, shorts, £20). I got no change out of £100! Now he's galavanting about the house wearing his new strip! Need to be extra careful now, because the last time I bought him a Brazil strip - in the run up to France '98 (when he was all of five), some lowlife sneaked into our garden one day and stole it from the washing line. This time it'll be wired to the mains!
