Dear Mr. Edwards,
Thank you for putting these pictures on the internet. I am also a direct descendent of the Cheney’s that lived at Shurland Hall at one time. I wanted to let Howard know that I tried to email him at the email he posted, but it is showing as not valid. Please post a valid email and I can email you all the information that my cousin and I have collected on the Cheney family and how they came to be in North Carolina and later in Cheneyville, Louisiana.

I love your photos and thank you for posting them. Growing up in Texas my father or grandmother did not tell me about my Chaney name or about my ancestors. I never even met my paternal grandfather. I got into Geneology to find out a little about my ancestors, and have traced my lineage back to Thomas Cheyney of Shurland. To find family ties to such a historical place is serendipitous. I especially love the older B&W photos of Shurland before restoration. However, if I rich, I would have purchased Shurland for £ 2.500.000,00. We can dream, right?

Like Sherry, I love your photos. If you ever come back to look again, I would love to hear of your ties to the Chaney/Cheney/Cheyney family. Knowledge is everything. If anyone has information about the Cheyney's of Shurland and Shepply Isle, please send me anything you might have.

i as looking on ancestry. com and found a will of my great great great grandfather his name was alexander till and noticed the adress was shurland hall wonder if anyone can throw any light on this

That's just prodded a memory. When I was attending Jefferson Rd primary school two of the four houses were Shurland and Cheyney! The four houses wore colored shoulder sashes. Can't remember which color was which.I'm pretty sure Shurland was blue.

I can remember 'exploring' Shurland Hall as a child (in the 1970's, I lived in nearby Bayview) and scared myself silly when my friends & I found the skeleton of a cat in the shell of the only remaining room.

My name is Alan Ward and I have been pointed towards your Shurland Hall pictures. I was the lucky archaeologist who undertook the limited excavation work whilst the gate-house range was being restored. At the moment I am writing the archive report and am in the process of attempting to collect as many pictorial views of the hall as possible for inclusion in the archive and eventually the published report. I have some of the pictures on your web site, but I am hoping you will give permission to use those in your collection as well. Basically, it just makes it so much easier if someone has done the 'donkey work' already! I, however, do have all the problems of bringing the drawings and text together. The structural phasing of the monument is (as so often in archaeology) a nightmare (forget what you see on 'Time Team'). There are at least two earlier structural phases below the ruined North Wing and this was just seeing bits in very small trenches, and nine(!) phases in the northern basement area which was dug more extensively.

Hoping you will be prepared to help.

Loved your photographs. I am a direct decendant of the Cheney/Chaney family that came to live at Shurland Hall. I have been doing a family genealogy for the last several months and was so delighted to actually find some existing photographs. I hope by now some worth has been done to restore what was obvious a beautiful and impressive home. Thank you for sharing your wonderful photographs.

shurland hall was the backdrop from my house in warden road were i lived for 16 years.
