Minster Abbey

The Church of St. Mary with St. Sexburgha, or MINSTER ABBEY as it is usually called, stands high up on a hill in Minster.
Minster Abbey was founded in 664, and part of the original nuns' chapel built with Kentish ragstone, containing flints and Roman tiles which can be seen in the north-east corner of the present church.
Standing close by the Abbey is the Gatehouse Museum - a building of great age, full of interesting Sheppey artefacts and well worth a visit.

The Vicar in the mid 50's was Rev Allan.I attended a xmas party at the Blue Bird cafe. Rev Allan was dressed as Father Christmas, came into the room with his sack saying ho ho ho, do you know who I am children.I recognized his voice and replied 'Yes you are Rev Allan'. He must have thought that I was being a smart ar-e ( I was'ant) and only got a small present.

Yes I remember him very well as in the summer of 1965 I met his daughter Catherine, and we used to see each other during the daytime on the beach at Sheerness. I was a deck chair attendant in those days. She took me to the church at Minster on a few occasions, and I was lucky enough to have met him. He was a fine man, very cheerful and friendly. I heard that he died last year, aged over 80. Very sad.

Does anyone remember a Rev Buckett who was vicar here during the summer of 1965. He must have been doing a holiday relief.

I was born on the Isle of Sheppey...in 1963. My family lived in Sheerness, but i was born at Minster Hospital.....then when i was about 3years old we moved to Love Lane, Minster and we lived there until about 1972....when the whole family moved to hertfordshire. I can remember going to Minster Infants and Junior School,but i can't remember what road it was on....i can remember walking over what we called 'the bunny bank'...which was a massive hill(at least it seemed it at the time)!!....and the only white Christmas i can remember was at Minster....!!My dad loved to fish, and he would take some of us children down to the beach - and i can remember doing that one Christmas Eve!!....it was cold!..... My best friend was a gut called Gary (Doushiea)....and he and his family lived on the road at the end of Love Lane (would it have been Scarborough Drive)???? Best wishes anyway....Michele Alexander

I was a choir boy here prior to 1959 - 5 shillings per week - practice on a Friday, then service Sunday morning / evening. If I did a wedding on a Saturday I got 2 shillings and sixpence. Pretty good when you remember that a small portion of chips was 3d.
