...spectacularly located at the foot of a volcano, Pichincha, and itself positioned at 2,850 metres, Quito is the second highest capital city in South America. The old city, or the Centro Colonial, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its many churches, notably La Catedra, El Sagrario, La Companhia, La Basilica to name a few situated along and around the Plaza de la Independencia and pastel coloured colonial buildings and houses lining steep and narrow winding streets. The churches have ornate interiors...gilded and wonderful to behold...and impressive doorways but most impressive remains the piety of the faithful who flock to pray...and to hear Mass...
