Why bother hiking on Floating Island? Certain places call to me to be explored, and this was one of those places. After parking my car on the north side of the "island" I hiked and scrambled southward through a bleak landscape to the summit, which is 5109 feet (1558 m) above sea level. The weather started out as sunny and calm, but a storm blew in from the southwest, changing the mood dramatically: its fierce wind produced a cloud of salt dust 2000 feet tall.
