On this hike I wanted to visit a cave located high on a fin. On previous hikes in the canyon I had seen the cave far above and heard it call to me. Whenever a landscape feature calls to me I must go to it.

The cave is near the southern end of a long fin. Hiking to the northern end of the fin was easy as pie, as was walking atop the fin---at least for a while. As I continued toward the cave end, the non-threatening terrain evolved into very scary drop-offs on both sides of the fin. Even though the fin was wide and there was no danger of falling off, my fear of heights was activated.

Timidly, I continued along the fin, hoping to overcome the fear. But it never subsided; in fact it got worse when I saw that the fin had a very narrow section ahead. At that point I realized that reaching the cave was not meant to be. I got to within 350 yards of the cave---not exactly a heroic effort.

Nevertheless, the exploring was fun.
