On the mountain's large wave terrace, Joe Tripod (my rock-steady photographic assistant)
stayed behind briefly to effect this self-portrait. What would I do without his help?

This barren landscape has not a single tree, only clumps of grass and stunted bushes. The lack
of dramatic vegetation was somewhat compensated for by occasional interesting rock formations
that suggested long-past volcanic activity. The summit is out of view to the right.
