This cryptobiotic/cryptogamic/etc. soil/crust is very fragile, takes a long time to develop, and a long time to recover from damage. That's why many governmental agencies and non-profit organizations ask people not to walk/ride/drive on the stuff and why I made many short walking detours while exploring the mesa. Its presence allows other plant life to exist. A Web search will produce many hits of interest.

I meant my remark to be humorous; I'm glad you took it this way! Cryptobiotic soil is not actually an endangered species, is it? To me, it seems like lichen, which is somewhat indestructible, and hardly a rareity...your fascination with it is fascinating...Is cryptobiotic soil a species worthy of more study?? It does seem like something out of a Martian landscape--
