Drainage pattern

Sister Superior, Ida Gulch, Utah

The drainage pattern in Ida Gulch fascinated me, in large part
merely because it was visible. Where I live, in western
Washington state, the forests conceal such details.

Plant life is limited by the amount of precipitation, which I think is less than 10 inches (25cm) per year. The major type of plant life is cryptobiotic soil, but is not visible from afar because it only gets about two inches high and looks like lumpy dirt. Here and there are small bushes and clumps of grass as in the foreground. The largest and most varied plants are in the stream beds, where water lingers after a storm passes through the area. The lack of plants with roots systems causes the soil to be easily washed away when rain falls, but the effect of any storm is short-lived.

A beautiful place. The redness is almost overwhelming.
I note the circle in the centre.
With all the drainage, there must be a lot of water about.
Why is there not more plants about ?
