Desk chair retired after 34 years

My wife and I got this chair as a gift around 1975, when we lived in Mainz-Kastel, Germany. We used it as a desk chair in our apartment. In 1978 it went with us to the States, where it continued to fulfill its desk destiny. At one point my wife got a chair with arms and began trying to convince me to get one ("You don't know what you're missing"). I was happy with the cool blue chair. Eventually I tired of her harping and in August 2008 I bought a desk chair having arms and---once I assembled it---concluded that my wife was correct to extoll the virtues of a chair having arms.

However, assembly did not take place right away. Knowing that good things take time, I let the packaged chair age in the garage until the following May. Then I assembled it. But wait---there's more waiting to be done. I was not psychologically ready to let go of my German chair, so I let the new chair sit unused in the rec room. The chair's charcoal gray color was not as pleasing as the blue of the other chair, but one can't have everything. During this final period of waiting, our cat Binky slept on the new chair a few times, covering it with light gray hairs.

In September 2009 the City of Renton sponsored a recycling/swap event, which I saw as a good opportunity to finally say good-bye to an old blue friend. On September 19, ownership of the blue chair passed from me to some unknown person who took it home. The gray chair with arms began its desk duty the same day.
