Unharnessed

Crater Island, Utah (26 mi./ 42 km northeast of Wendover) view map

The black straps on the handcart and dangling from my waist are parts of the pulling harness I made. It was supposed to be the most efficient way to transfer my body’s motion to cart motion, just as with a horse-drawn wagon.

But it worked poorly. What I had forgotten about horse-drawn wagons was that the connection between the horse and the wagon had no slack. My harness straps had slack and that somehow allowed my walking movements to create a jerking motion that was annoying and counter-productive. It was more comfortable to not use the harness at all, and just hold onto the handles---even though the angle of the handles was not good for pulling. Later modifications to the cart made pulling by hand much easier.

What DID work as well as I had hoped was Joe Tripod's camera support. Without it this picture would have been impossible. Geo-tagging is approximate.
