Watercock at the University of the Philippines

Fatbirder's Top 1000 Birding Websites

Photo-lifebirds are very rare for me now, and my 192nd one - a Watercock - is courtesy of a tip by Prof. Gerry de Villa at the University of the Philippines, in Diliman, Quezon City. When Prof Gerry, who's an accomplished bird photographer himself, informed me of a regular sighting of this bird, I promptly scheduled an early morning attempt this April 8, 2006.

The bird preferred to stay at a distance, about 60 meters away, with a pond separating it from our closest position. I had to use a 2x TC to make it a bit bigger in the frame. Nevertheless, it seems to appear in its favorite spot regularly, and it should allow me better pics soon.

A pic of a Scaly-breasted Munia in a textbook pose, my most detailed so far of this species, completed this short but sweet birding foray.
