Subic Bay - Part V

Fatbirder's Top 1000 Birding Websites

I observed a very unusual bird behavior on this trip to Subic Bay. Blue-throated Bee-eaters were spreading their wings and tails, and stayed in that position on the ground near their nest. When I first saw this, I thought the bee-eater was dead, but it flew away once I approached it. Then I saw a lot of bee-eaters doing the same thing. More curiously, even a pair of wood-swallows several meters away imitated the act! Whether these birds were sunning themselves, cooling off, or trying to attract ants into their plumage, I'm not sure. But it was certainly a sight to behold.
