This uncommon endemic cuckoo was captured at, of all places, the vast campus of the University of the Philippines (Diliman, Quezon City). In my three years of birding in various rainforests in our islands, I've been able to see it only once again. I had to use a flash as main light in the dark undercanopy, making the bird's bright yellow eyering glow. This photo replaces the Elegant Tit in my elite gallery because of difficulty of finding this endemic beauty.

How many kinds of Cuculus range in Philippines?

Hi 3qy,

I can't get your query very clearly, so I'll answer both possibilities:

(1) I find the cuckoo very, very mesmerizing, particularly its expressive eyes.

(2) With fellow birders from the WBCP, we waited for it around its known habitat at the campus of the University of the Philippines. Thanks to Prof. Jerry de Villa for the tip. We waited over 4 hours before it showed up.

Thanks for visiting.

Hi Romy,
Good shot! This looks like a sub-adult. Yes, it is now considered a Philippine endemic on all of the major world lists. Ergo, Philippine Hawk-Cuckoo (Cuculus pectoralis).

This is a provisional ID. I'm using the Kennedy Guide and I'm not sure of the current taxonomy status of this bird. I wonder if it is now split to a separate species - Philippine Hawk-Cuckoo (Cuculus pectoralis), a Philippine endemic.
