Libertys

In the 1920's this was THE cinema to visit in West London - it was called The Liberty Cinema and, as you can see, was a highly decorative building. With the decline of cinema in the 60s and 70s and the changing face of Southall, Libertys closed and was used in my time in Southall as a market hall.

I was really thrilled to see it has reverted to use as a cinema, now known as the Himalaya Palace and showing Bollywood's finest. I can't tell you what a buzz that gave me. I just love the fact that this wonderful building is being used for what the architect intended again. One of these days I may even slip inside and see a movie.

I agree, it's great to see it being used as a cinema again. It is a very distinctive building!

However....... I lived in Southall from 1950-1971 and it was a cinema then, but called THE GAUMONT. My understanding is that it had always been called this (previous generations of my family having also lived in Southall). I have no knowledge of the name "Liberty" in connection with any venue in Southall.
