Ah smell the grass.......

There is very little in life to beat the excitement of the first game of the season. The ritualistic build-up to leaving home (lucky Spurs mug, lucky top etc) leaves me almost breathless with the thrill of it all then, when we arrive at White Hart Lane Station and see the cantilevers holding up the roof of the stand, it's so good it feels like coming home. It may seem incredible to anyone who doesn't support Spurs, but walking up Tottenham High Road, with the mix of crowds (hoardes of navy and white), smells (burgers, chips, kebabs) and sounds (footie songs, cheers as the players go into the car park) is a dizzying experience.

I have Paul Williams (an ex-boyfriend from twenty five years ago) to thank for my love of Spurs and I'm pleased to report that I'm carrying on his good work by recruiting a new supporter now myself. David has been to the game today and even though when I started seeing him he professed to hate football and even though his childhood dream team were the Leeds United of Billy Bremner and co, he went to the game with relish and loved watching the Spurs beat Leeds 2-1. When we got off the train and walked towards Tottenham High Road, he was as excited as I was to hear the fans in the pub on the corner singing and enjoying the pre-match pub atmosphere. The Bell and Hare was heaving, hot and sweaty but you can see our stand from its car park.

Our thanks to Sarah who is on her way home from Australia, so couldn't go herself, for David's ticket. Sarah, it's all like it was but without the misery of the last few games of last season. I can't wait to see you and catch up on the summer's gossip, but for now you'll have to make do with Steve Carr (who played fabulously as did most of the team) about to take a corner.
