One of the most-changed parts of Cardiff is what’s now known as the bay area, but was once simply Cardiff docks. It’s been pimped and primped to within an inch of its life and can now consider itself well and truly gentrified. When David was a student, it was a derelict, depressing wilderness frequented only by junkies, hookers and generally bad sorts but now it’s a tourist haven with shops selling Welsh goods and “eateries” selling anything but Welsh goods. You can eat big brand Italian style (Carluccio’s, Pizza Express, Zizzi), big brand South American (Las Iguanas), big brand Asian (Wagamama) and pretty much every other big brand chain restaurant. There are a few one-offs but the whole thing is really packaged for tourists who want to feel safe because they know the offering of the chains.
Don’t get me wrong, it is nice and a massive improvement on dereliction but there isn’t much of a beating Welsh heart in this part of town and that’s despite some of the most stunning Welsh architecture, new and old. It’s a shame really.
Anyway, it’s the school Easter holidays and in Roald Dahl Plass (a glorious place named as such because the author was born in this fair city), there is a celebratory atmosphere and a carousel. Imagine my delight to find one of the prancing horses giving me a trip down memory lane – Archie the wooden horse reminding me of my beloved boy Archie the “proper dog” (aka Border Collie). OK, it’s tenuous but I do love this shot.
