6th July 2014 - interlopers

My perfectly fine shot of Pearce’s Engine House has been RUINED by interlopers… I had just framed up my shot and waited for some cloud to pass by and just as I went click, David’s head popped up, a ball came hurtling over the horizon and the dogs came flying after it. (Actually I don't mind really - I quite like the fact that they've gatecrashed my shot.)

We’ve been out on the moor this evening and have seen some amazing things and some gruesome ones. On the grizzly side we found a ewe’s skeleton all smashed up amidst a pile of wool, then later, about a mile or so away from the ewe we found a lamb that had garrotted itself on barbed wire – it was very dead by the time we arrived on the scene but from a distance we couldn’t be sure so we had to try to help. DM was extremely brave and went over to it so he could be completely certain it was actually dead but its body was cold so well past saving.

On the amazing side, we have found several patches of my precious Euphrasia vigursii. One of the patches we found was in sight of home – when I was studying it I actually found a reference in a scientific paper to it being found on land opposite our house – yes, our house was actually named in the paper and I had hoped to find it still there – this was the first time I’ve been able to prove it. I took a small piece of foliage home so I could check the flower size with calipers and the presence of glandular hairs with my microscope. It was definitely my precious species. I am thrilled to bits.

that's a nice image of moor and ruin…would never have thought twice about corrugations on horizon
