16 - Feminist activism against nuclear weapons and militarism in Europe

AUDRE LORDE ROOM
Workshop 9 Feminist activism against nuclear weapons and militarism in Europe - by Rebecca Johnson and Heena Thompson.

Feminists led European movements against nuclear weapons 30 years ago and our energy and politics is needed again to finish the task.  NATO, France, the UK and also US and Russia continue to upgrade weapons for Europe’s future wars, costing billions of euros. As long as our region remains so heavily militarised and nuclear-dependent, it impedes disarmament and steals from the whole world’s real security needs.  This workshop will share new thinking and ideas to build feminist leadership and activism for banning and eliminating nuclear weapons and diminishing the role of militarism in international relations.

WHAT ARE NEW INSIGHTS THAT YOU DISCOVER IF YOU COMBINE THE POWER OF OUR DNA WITH THE CONCLUSION OF THIS WORKSHOP ?

- information about spending on nuclear weapons awakens people to resist them. For example in Italy 120 US bases and 90 US bombs
- all countries – including non-nuclear states are starting to discuss effects on nuclear weapons in humanitarian terms, for example the Oslo conference in 2013 & Mexico conference in February 2014, with the aim of banning nuclear weapons globally + WIB London action against nuclear weapons
- call on solidarity for support for monthly women’s camp at Aldermaston
- action in August 9th, 2014: anniversary of bombing Nagasaki. Could we have an international women’s WIB camp ?
- focus on consequences of using nuclear weapons or accidents – flown across Italy, crashed in bay of Biscay, on nuclear submarines, would affect health, life & climate. One billion people in Africa would die from a dust cloud - a nuclear winter – which would create a nuclear famine.
- what can we do to create awareness ?

CALLING ALL WOMEN IN BLACK:
JOIN THE HUMAN PEACE SCARF FROM ALDERMASTON TO BURGHFIELD
SATURDAY 9 AUGUST 2014

As publicised at the WiB Encuentro in Leuven, people all over the world have been knitting to make a 7 mile peace scarf.
Come and join us in rolling it out on 9 August - Nagasaki Day - between Britain's nuclear bomb factories at Aldermaston and Burghfield, 50 miles west of London.
With 2016 as the political deadline for preventing Trident replacement, we have to ACT NOW to become VISIBLE and stop billions more being squandered on new weapons of mass destruction.
HELP US SCRAP TRIDENT AND BAN ALL NUCLEAR WEAPONS
On August 9, join us for a family-friendly day of mass opposition to Trident replacement. Whether you've knitted or not, come to Aldermaston and be part of this inspiring action!
HELP US Make it BIG so the politicians take notice. Trident costs us £3 billion every year, up to £100 billion if the government foolishly decides to build more subs and weapons in 2016. Tell them to CUT TRIDENT, not our NHS, education and environmental security.
Make this a summer of peace not war! Resist the war machines. Help us prevent the next military humanitarian disaster. Support international negotiations to ban all nuclear weapons. Together we must put human security first.
There will be 8 'milestones' organised by different parts of Britain between Aldermaston and Burghfield. Bring a picnic, plenty of water, suncream and bells to ring. Accessible toilets and localised activities, music etc. will be at all 8 Milestones between Aldermaston and Burghfield.

This is a nonviolent demonstration. For more info and local contacts for coaches and milestones, email: campaigns@cnduk.org

WOMEN IN BLACK, other women's groups and international activists are especially welcome to join the GREEN MILESTONE in the middle of the route, not far from Mortimer railway station. Any women and girls are welcome to join us from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th August at the Aldermaston Women's Peace Camp (a women only peace camp that has protested at Aldermaston one
