Hawaiian Goose (Nene)

Nene
Branta sandvicensis

The Hawaiian Goose or Nene is and endemic species on Maui and is on the Federal List of Endangered Species. By the 1950's the Nene were gone from Haleakala. In 1962 local Boy Scouts carried a juvenile nene into the Haleakala crater in backpacks in hopes of rebuilding the population. Despite the program and continued efforts, there are fewer that 200 nene in the Haleakala National Park today because of the harsh environment and predation by introduced mammals such as the mongosse and rats. The Nene is the Hawaiian State Bird. (Source: "Birds of Haleakala National Park, National park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior)
