The Florida Manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris)is native to Florida and is a sub-species of the West Indian manatee. The Florida manatee is on the Federal and Florida State endangered species list due to death from human-related issues, natural causes, and loss of habitat. The Marine Mammal Section of the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) has programs in place to conserve the manatee through scientific research and education.
