Southern Pearly-eye

Copyright © Lewis Scharpf view map

Lethe portlandia
Moore's Mill Creek watershed
Auburn, Alabama
Note: While photographing other insects on this tree, a beautiful
Southern Pearly-eye butterfly suddenly lighted right in front of me.
Given the wrinkles present on the wings, particularly the hind wing, I suspect this butterfly had recently emerged from its chrysalis.
The colors were more vivid than I had ever observed. Photo taken in the watershed of Moore's Mill Creek, Auburn, Alabama.
