Probably a late instar, i.e. 4th through 6th
These instars have reddish-brown head mottled with white and body
brownish with white subdorsal and lateral lines.

Note: This caterpillar has near the head, two oval whitish colored eggs of a tachinid fly, perhaps Nemosturimia spp.

Parasitic wasps also parasitize armyworms.
