Egretta rufescens
Nonbreeding Adult
Pelican Peninsula
Dauphin Island, AL
Note: This bird is listed as "Near Threatened" by the Cornell Ornithology Unit.
Numbers were decimated by plume hunters in the late 1800's.
Reportedly not seen in Florida between 1927 and 1937.
Today, the current US population is about 2000 pairs.
