Gulf Coast Spiny Softshell Turtle

Copyright © Lewis Scharpf

Apalone spinifera aspera
This species has spiny or bumpy projections beginning at the fron edge of the carapace
and going down the center of its shell.
Probably a female because of shell splotches and mottling not present in male or juveniles.
This species is declining in numbers and is listed as a Species of Special Concern in several states.
