Thanks for your comments Don. Your point is well taken that this may well be a young bird in the process of molting. It was one of our local Audubon birders who suggested that this might be an aberrant color pattern on an adult.

Could it be moulting from immature (or juvenile) plumage into that of an adult? (PS Am licensed bird bander in Australia, though haven't done much for many years now.)
