This view was taken from my level of trail, looking down at the level that I would next go on (the wooden railing closest to the bottom of the picture), and then if you look closer still, you'll see more wooden railing making a large "V" shape further down the mountain. Those "V's" are called "switch-backs", which allows a trail to be on only one side of a mountain, going back & forth across it.
