Sue Bland #1
This marker is located on Route 66 in Tulsa, OK, to commemorate the first discovery of oil in Tulsa
County in 1901. It was discovered by two Doctors, Dr. Clinton and Dr. Bland, on the Creek Indian land
allotment of Bland's wife, Sue. Tulsa would eventually be the center of the booming oil industry in
the U.S., earning it the title, "Oil Capitol of the World." Tulsa lost this distinction in the 1980's
when the industries began to move all their corporate headquarters to Houston. Tulsa is still the
home of two major refineries. Neither one operates at the capacity they used to.
