It is peak American toad breeding season right now in Ottawa, a bit earlier than usual because of our exceptionally early, warm spring. All frogs have a brief time in which to attract a mate, breed and lay eggs. Some have a briefer time than others. Toads can call for a couple of weeks before breeding ceases but only if their breeding is interrupted by cold weather. Otherwise they can often be done with breeding in 3 or 4 days! During breeding season, they are mating and calling constantly, during both day and night (even more active at night).

I want to put in a good word for toads: (1)they don't cause warts (!) and (2) they are gardener's friends. In fact people now set out toad houses hoping to attract these beneficial creatures. You can consider yourself blessed if one takes up residence in your garden.
