This is the group that contains the best known of all flies, the house fly (Musca domestica), but there are hundreds more species in this diverse group. According to Stephen Marshall, in his fantastic new book on Flies (2012), there are 5,200 species in this family, worldwide, and most "are innocuous saprophages or predators in a wide variety of natural habitats."
