An early appearing fly in the Muscidae family. It is also called Autumn Face Fly because it will overwinter in homes (and other places)in autumn, emerging in spring to feed on flowers such as this early blooming coltsfoot. According to Bug Guide it is native to parts of Africa and Eurasia but was introduced into North America in the 1940s, probably (I am guessing), accidentally. Bug Guide says that it gets its common name because "in summer, adults annoy the faces of cattle and horses, where they lap exudation from the eyes, nostrils and mouth."
