Northern walkingstick (Diapheromera femorata)

High Lonesome Nature Reserve

These are among the more bizarre insects we get in the north woods. Very easy to mistake for a twig or stick until they move. Although they are said to be common, I have seen only a few, but have probably passed by others without knowing. Along with this one I saw a mating pair nearby. According to Bug Guide, the males are approx. 3 inches in length, the females nearly 4 inches. The size does not include their long, long legs. Bug guide says: "emales drop eggs singly on to the forest floor. Eggs overwinter in leaf litter hatch in the spring. Nymphs become adults during the summer and fall."

Are they similar to those I know as stick insects?
Great catch and so difficult to spot.
