Northern walkingstick, male and female, (Diapheromera femorata)

High Lonesome Nature Reserve

The female is large one on the left who looks even more twig-like than the male on the right. In total we saw three walkingsticks that day. One male on his own, and then close by this mating pair. Having gone years without seeing this insect, to see three in one day was a real treat.

Hard to tell what's a twig and what's an insect! Well spotted and captured. V.

just incredible that an insect can look so like a plant, you must have sharp eyes to see them - or perhaps they gave themselves away by walking
