Tomato hornworm moth caterpillar (Manduca quinquemaculatus) #7776

Reveler Conservation Area

Actually, this was just adjacent to the Conservation Area, on some tomato plants. There were about 8 of these larvae, some much bigger than this. They turn into a very large sphinx moth known as the Five-spotted Hawk Moth and I'm hoping to see one at the conservation area one evening, when I set out moth lights.

Great capture of this hornworm at work! It's amazing how much they eat. In the past I would remove them but then I figured out they do no real harm. I am always pruning my tomatoes anyway and them munching stresses the plant and that makes it set fruit! They always have a home here! V

Nice capture. In the wild I would leave it alone, but on my own property I "rehomed" them into the woods, assuming they wouldn't find their way back to the tomato plants. I can't grow tomatoes any more because being surround by growing trees I no longer have enough sun for vegetables. It saddened me to realize that this was my last year for eggplants, my favorite crop.
