Treehopper (Publilia) nymphs and recently transformed adults

Larose Forest

The spiky little critters are Publilia treehopper nymphs, while the whitish ones are recently transformed adults. The adults will soon turn dark brown. Found on a goldenrod leaf, which is typically where I do see these insects.

Who could imagine these are the same species? The transformations from one life stage to another in the insect world, shown so well here, are fascinating.

Pretty amazing with all those little spikes! I do think they're cuter as adults, though. V.

Excellent find, Christine! Love the mosaic patterns and fibre on the
green leafs.
