Spring peeper (Hyla crucifer)

Larose Forest

This is a tiny froglet of the year, sitting on a goldenrod leaf. The great naturalist writer, Joseph Wood Krutch has these memorable words about spring peepers, a small frog heard early in spring (and again sporadically in later summer):

"I have often wondered that a world which pretends to mark so many days, and to celebrate so many occasions, should accept quite so casually the day when Hyla crucifer announces that winter is over."

Love the name, the message this species inadvertently conveys to humans, and the photo.
